in black flats and purple nightwearboyshorts, a gray bathrobe and my not-washed-in-four-days bun watching her move twice my weight in wheat from one trunk to the other… out of spite. i’m thinking, “if i did not agree to this, why is it a “good” thing to do?” that’s what she keeps telling me. it’s good. it’s right. so i am watching this tiny woman huff back and forth in a red and black moomoo. to confirm this giving is from me, i have to touch each bag of wheat. i awkwardly dip a finger into each tear as the annoyance resurfaces and i’m planning how to play this right so i can leave in a moment of “i can’t stand being in this house” to smoke a joint and chain smoke twice its weight in cigarettes.

"I don’t trust people who think of themselves as liberals. What I am saying is that I don’t trust missionaries. I don’t want anybody working with me because they think they are doing something for me. What I want them to do is work in their own communities. I want you to tell your brothers and your sisters and your wife and your children what it is all about. Don’t tell me, because I already know."

What do we want from each other
after we have told our stories
do we want
to be healed do we want
mossy quiet stealing over our scars
do we want
the powerful unfrightening sister
who will make the pain go away
mother’s voice in the hallway
you’ve done it right
the first time darling
you will never need
to do it again.

Thunder grumbles on the horizon
I buy time with another story
a pale blister of air
cadences of dead flesh
obscure the vowels.
